Party Hats

Ask me anything   Submit   My senior thesis project is making party hats out of paper. This blog will report the progress and inspiration involved.
I would love your input and ideas.

Sorry for the delay folks. Here are the photos! I love the way they turned out.

Brenda at Inspire Photography did a marvelous job!!

A lot has happened since the last time I posted. I apologize for being a negligent blogger.
First of all, the hats are done. (Yay!!) At least the hats I am presenting, I am sure there are more to come!
Today I had a photo shoot of all the final product. It was ton of coordination work, but a great learning experience!
The photos will be posted shortly (they are amazing)! However, in the mean time I would like to thank everyone that made today possible:
Katalin Green: Event design extraordinaire, amazing person and great friend. Katalin picked up all the loose ends and really took this photo shoot to the next level. Without her opinions suggestions and general help the shoot would look unfinished.
Brenda Robidou (Inspire photography): Takes stunning photos! I cannot wait to sit down and go through them. She worked all day with me to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. Brenda is a really hard worker and geniunley loves taking photos. Her passion is clear when looking at her work.
Indulgence: If you live in Bozeman and have not been here… Go! The girls in this store are not only amazingly talented but so helpful! They did ALL of the makeup for the shoot (everyone looked gorgeous!). They let us use their space to change and store our props. You will not regret going to see these girls, its impossible to leave the store in a bad mood with their fantastic attitudes and talents!
Plonk: Thank you for letting us take over your back patio today… it was perfect.
Elle’s Belles: Another wonderful store to go visit.  A bakery with flavor :) Kurt from Elle’s Belles made a huge cupcake that looked just like the birthday hat. I have such a respect for chef’s and cake artists.
My Models: They gave up a good portion of their Fridays to help me with my senior thesis. They all did an amazing job, we got some perfect photos, and I am so pleased with the way things worked out. You were all amazing. really. amazing.
Thanks again to everyone! You are wonderful! The pictures will be posted soon. (Yay!)

Some more hats…. The flowers are made of ribbon and tool. They can be worn seperatley or as one piece.

The wire hat’s adornments are removable and I am working on a more masculine attachment that would also be an option.

The “Stuck on You” collection. Both of the hats are made entirely from masking tape. I initially made them for an anniversary celebration. They can also be worn separate as birthday hats…

YAY PROGRESS!

The last couple of days a have been a big struggle. I have tried a lot of techniques and failed. I have talked to a lot of people with good ides.
A good idea is never finished for me. I get excited about something and often times get stuck on the thinking stage. I really enjoy thinking and sometimes it gets me into trouble.
Anyways long story short here is my thought process over the last couple days.

Brainstorm…

Upon coming across some really amazing hat designers (Louis Mariette, and Phillip Treacy among others) my ideas have taken flight and dont know where to land. I am in an exciting yet extremely frustrating part of my creative process right now. So… Here are my current thoughts:

My Thesis “brief” rather is as follows:

“The senior thesis experience is a capstone element of your undergraduate study and a high point in the exhibition of your graphic design artwork. It demonstrates your ability to make intelligent and informed choices, brings together personal interests and ideas, and conveys your abilities as a designer and/or illustrator. It shows your ability to think creatively and problem solve effectively based on sound theories and professional practice. Each student will produce a conclusive piece or body of work that demonstrates an understanding of the stated criteria and is supported by skills and relevant visual and written research…”

With that being said I have come across a couple questions.

  1. Is it important that I create a business that could one day be attainable? For example: having 3 hat forms that can be customized to keep inventory under control.
  2. If I decide to design more “couture” looking hats, is it important to have events to plan the hat around? Would this make them more sellable and realistic?
  3. How important is paper in the process? I am realizing that some of the designs I have envisioned are not possible with only paper. Plus while the idea is nice a hat made of solely paper is not durable.
  4. Who am I making the hats for? Do I care, or should I take advantage of the opportunity to make something beautiful with no client? This question goes a long with the first question… is it important to have a business plan i.e. target audience?

Some important questions I need to figure out before taking the next step…

But on that note check out how classic Audrey Hepburn is:
